Denote by (M)₀ the identity component of the group of the compactly supported Cʳ diffeomorphisms of a connected C∞ manifold M. We show that if (M)≥2 and r≠ (M)+1, then any homomorphism from (M)₀ to ¹() or ¹(S¹) is trivial.
