Vorticity and the Nernst Effect in Cuprate Superconductors

We present a review of the vortex-Nernst effect in the 3 cuprate families La₂₋ₓSrₓCuO₄, Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O₈, and YBa₂Cu₃Oy, and discuss the scenario that the superconducting transition in the hole-doped cuprates corresponds to the destruction of long-range phase coherence rather than the vanishing of the order-parameter amplitude.
